Finding Clarity in the Fog: How My Parent Brain Journey Led to Purpose

It feels like a common scene: I’m standing in my kitchen, holding my phone, and… completely blank on why I walked in there. My toddler is calling from the other room; I have a work meeting in 20 minutes, and somewhere in this house is my coffee – probably cold by now.

Sound familiar?

That moment – and countless others like it – was part of my parent brain fog journey and my path to creating Focus Like A Mother. But let me back up a bit.

TL;DR – From Fog to Focus:
A Parent Focus Coach’s Journey Through Parent Brain Changes

As a mom who’s experienced fertility treatments, NICU stays, pregnancy loss, and the daily juggle of parenting two kids, I discovered something surprising: parent brain fog isn’t a glitch – it’s an upgrade in progress. After diving deep into the neuroscience and completing professional coach training, I found that working with these changes (instead of fighting them) transforms the experience. Now I help other parents navigate their cognitive transitions with evidence-based strategies that actually work. Because you don’t have to choose between being a great parent and feeling like yourself again.

My Parent Brain Fog Journey

Hi, I’m Megan. Like many of you, I never expected “Mom Brain” to hit quite so hard. Before becoming a mom, I was the person who could juggle multiple projects while remembering every detail of every conversation. Then parenthood arrived, and suddenly, I was forgetting words mid-sentence and finding my keys in the refrigerator, or worse… the cheese in the pantry (gross).

An Unexpected Beginning

My path to parenthood wasn’t straightforward. After years of fertility treatments (hello, hormone brain!), our son arrived early at 28 weeks. The NICU journey that followed taught me more about resilience – and sleep deprivation – than I ever expected to learn.

Those early days were a blur of beeping monitors, pumping schedules, and trying to remember which nurse told me what about our son’s care. I found myself taking detailed notes in an old college notebook just to keep track of basic information – something that had never been necessary.

Then parenthood arrived, and suddenly, I was forgetting words mid-sentence and finding my keys in the refrigerator, or worse…

When Parent Brain Met Career

Fast-forward to returning to work, and there I was—a new mom trying to balance video calls while keeping track of feeding schedules and medical appointments. The mental load was overwhelming. I’d be in the middle of presenting and suddenly draw a blank on terms I’d used hundreds of times before.

…this wasn’t just about being tired or overwhelmed. My brain was literally reorganizing itself for parenthood.

Something had to give. When our son was 15 months old, I decided to step away from my corporate role. I thought having more time would help clear the fog, but here’s what I discovered instead: this wasn’t just about being tired or overwhelmed. My brain was literally reorganizing itself for parenthood.

The Plot Twist on My Parent Brain Fog Journey

Life had more lessons in store. After experiencing a silent miscarriage in early 2022 (a loss that left me feeling like my brain and body were both failing), I was able to get pregnant again. During my second trimester, that familiar fog rolled in – but this time, something was different.

Instead of fighting against it, I got curious. I started diving into research about how pregnancy and parenthood change our brains. What I discovered fascinated me: these changes weren’t a glitch in the system but an upgrade in progress.

Finding My Way Through the Fog

Working with a coach specializing in neurodiversity opened my eyes to new possibilities. I learned strategies that worked with my changing brain instead of against it. For the first time since becoming a parent, I felt like I could trust my mind again.

When our daughter arrived in early 2023, I navigated the newborn phase with an entirely different perspective. Yes, I still attempted to put the cheese in the pantry occasionally (okay, maybe more than occasionally). But now I understood why – and more importantly, I had the tools to work through it.

For the first time since becoming a parent, I felt like I could trust my mind again.

The Light Bulb Moment

It was during a conversation with my pelvic floor physical therapist, of all people, that everything clicked. We were swapping stories about our “Mom Brain” moments, and suddenly, I realized that parents needed more than just coping strategies. They needed someone who understood both the science and the lived experience of these changes – and how to navigate a path forward.

We were swapping stories about our “Mom Brain” moments, and suddenly, I realized that parents needed more than just coping strategies.

That realization led me to professional coach training and creating Focus Like A Mother. Because here’s what I’ve learned: parent brain isn’t something to “fix” – it’s something to understand and work with.

Where I Am Now

These days, you’ll find me balancing life with two kids while helping other parents navigate their own cognitive transitions. Some days, that means coaching calls while my daughter naps. On other days, it means writing about neuroscience research while my son is at daycare.

And yes, I still have my moments. Just last week, I spent 10 minutes looking for my phone… while it was in my back pocket. But now I know these moments aren’t signs of failure – they’re signs of my brain prioritizing what matters most.
